POLICIES

Violation of the rules, responsibilities, and agreements set forth in these policies, may result in disciplinary action. Severe violations of university-wide policies may result in disciplinary actions from the Library, University, or legal action as defined by those policies. 

  • Makers must be affiliated with Virginia State University (Faculty, Staff, Student, and special presenters).
  • Makers must schedule (via LibCal) before using the makerspace.
  • Prior to using the Makerspace, Makers must;
    • a) Complete Orientation
    • b) complete a Maker Agreement form; and
    • c) Verify their identity with a current institutional identification card.
  • The Maker acknowledges that the Library is only able to provide consumable materials on a limited basis. The Maker agrees to avoid wasting consumable supplies and materials. The Maker may need to supply their own consumables to meet their needs. Consumables must meet equipment specifications as described in the documentation.
  • The Maker will NOT use their created products for commercial/business-related purposes or allow any third party to do so.
  • The Library is not responsible for any lost, damaged or stolen property the Maker may bring into the Makerspace.
  • Food and drink are prohibited in the Makerspace.
  • The Library cannot guarantee confidentiality of designs nor specific delivery times for objects being printed.
  • Maximum room capacity is 12 people. If the room is full, additional people will not be allowed in.
  • The Makerspace is open by appointment 8-5 Monday-Friday, and closed on weekends. Hours may vary seasonally.
  • Safety guidelines are posted at the entrance of the Makerspace and specific safety issues regarding each piece of equipment will be posted at specific equipment stations.
  • The Maker agrees to take precautions to avoid causing unnecessary mess or damage in the Makerspace. The Maker agrees to clean up following use. The Maker agrees to inform the Library staff member in the event they are unable to return a work surface, tool or equipment to its original state.
  • The Maker acknowledges that the Library is only able to provide consumable materials on a limited basis. The Maker agrees to avoid wasting consumable supplies and materials. The Maker may need to supply their own consumables to meet their needs. Consumables must meet equipment specifications as described in the documentation.
  • Makers must report any accident/incident that occurs in the makerspace to a Makerspace staff member immediately and cooperate fully in accident/incident reporting processes. The Makerspace uses the University’s Incident Report Form.
  • Items are to remain in the same condition, as they were prior to use by the Maker, barring normal wear and tear. The Maker agrees to pay for the loss or damage to any items and further agrees to accept the Library staff’s assessment of fair restitution for damage of items in part or total.
  • The Library cannot guarantee confidentiality of designs nor specific delivery times for objects being printed.

EQUIPMENT

  • By using the equipment, the Maker is certifying that they are capable of using it in a manner that is safe and consistent with its intended purpose.

  • Items are to remain in the same condition, as they were prior to use by the Maker, barring normal wear and tear. The Maker agrees to pay for the loss or damage to any items and further agrees to accept the Library staff’s assessment of fair restitution for damage of items in part or total.

  • Checked out items must be returned by the Maker.

  • The Maker agrees that if any tool or piece of equipment becomes unsafe or in a state of disrepair, they will immediately discontinue use and notify Makerspace staff.

  • The Library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print or vinyl cut request.

  • Only designated Library staff will have hands-on access to the 3D printers and vinyl cutter. Items created with a Library 3D printer or vinyl cutter and are not picked up within 14 days will become the property of the Library.

Workstations (PC and MAC)

  • These computers offer specialized multimedia hardware and software. There are 11 PC and 1 MAC. Due to COVID-19, we can have two people per group.

  • To use Adobe CC, you must have Adobe Account. It is free to sign up if you a VSU Faculty, Staff or Student.

3D Camera

  • Staff will assist with using 3D camera until we feel that user can use the equipment correctly.

3D Printer

  • The Library prohibits the use of its makerspace equipment to create material that is:
    • Prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
    • Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others.
    • Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the campus environment.
    • In violation of another’s intellectual property rights. For example, you cannot reproduce material subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection.

  • For the 3D printers, there is a maximum of four print jobs per month per person.

  • Maximum duration of a 3D print job is 6 hours.

  • 3D print jobs will be available within 7 days. Makers will receive an email notification when the 3D object is available.

Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and Robot arms

  • All projects used with computer parts must cleared by JML staff and returned to its original state when project is done.
