Urban Planning Subject Guide

This subject guide covers urban planning resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles, urban planning websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call  number are provided for print publications. 
 
 


Full-Text Databases

  • ABI Inform. Features articles on business, finance, management, public administrations, political science and urban planning.
  • Annual Reviews.  An excellent resource for current and retrospective articles on urban planning.  Both published and future content can be searched.  Searching can be done by keyword, author, or title.  Includes indexing from 1984 to current.
  • Cambridge Journals OnlineCJO indexes includes over 125 specialized journals from renowned research societies and associations in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Many full-text articles on urban planning and urban history can be located on this database. Each journal in CJO has its own home page with links to the current and back volumes, as well as brief description of the journal's purpose, format, and content. Keyword searching is available.
  • CQ Researcher. Presents full-text articles on current social, political, economic, and international issues.
  • CQ Weekly Report. Offers in-depth full-text articles on U.S. Congressional legislation, actions, and developments.
  • InfoTrac OneFile. A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles many with images. Updated daily.

Journal Indexes and Abstracts
  • GPO Monthly Catalog. Covers all types of US government documents, including Congressional reports, hearings, debates, and records; judiciary materials; and documents issued by executive departments.  Includes a bibliographic citation in each record.
  • PAIS.  Covers a range of political, social, public policy and urban planning  issues in scholarly journals and books.
  • Statistical Universe. Full-text database to U.S. Statistical data and some international statistics. Features include searching the Power Tables for finding fast answers, searching summaries of statistical publications for comprehensive overview of documents or selecting links to other websites with useful information about statistics.

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

  • Encyclopedia of Community Planning and Environmental Management. Facts on File. 1984. Encyclopedia of terms and concepts related to the areas of community planning and environmental management. Examples of issues covered include land use control, economic development, transportation, flood control, housing, air and water pollution, and historic preservation.   • Encyclopedia of Urban America: the Cities and Suburbs. by Neil Larry Shumsky. ABC-CLIO, 1998. Two volume set containing over 500 entries relating to specific urban phenomena, people, places, and events. Includes bibliography and index.   • Environmental Planning: a Condensed Encyclopedia. by Alan Gilpin. Noyes Publications, 1986. Designed to address the terms and issues confronted in the field of environmental planning, including land use, environmental impact assessments, and public administration.   • Language of Cities. by Charles Abrams. Viking Press, 1971. Short definitions relevant to housing, city planning, and economics, transportation, real estate, public administration, architecture, social welfare, public law, and government; with index.   • Urban Politics Dictionary. by John W. Smith. ABC-Clio, 1990. Gives an alphabetical list of terms primarily focusing on the United States and Canada that are associated with urban politics and related subjects. Each term is defined and its significance related to the urban arena is discussed. Many entries include a list of suggested readings. Includes an index. Internet Websites

  • Center for Urban Policy Research. Site of the Rutgers University affiliate research institution, consisting of a multidisciplinary team that conducts analysis of housing, land use, urban poverty, community change, economic development and forecasting, and environmental policy. 
  • Center for Urban Studies. The mission of Wayne State University's Center for Urban Studies is to improve understanding of and provide innovative responses to urban challenges. The center participates in defining and influencing local, regional, state and national urban policy. It engages community, government, institutions, and policymakers, in collaboration with university faculty and resources to transform knowledge into action. A wide range of research tools is available including a map gallery, data access, and interactive mapping.
  • Center for Urban Transportation Studies. An organization of multidisciplinary faculty and students who conduct studies on urban mass transit, transportation management, land use, travel forecasting, alternative futures, technology transfer, private sector involvement in transportation, ride sharing, energy constraints on transportation, port operation and planning, railroad operations, environmental impacts, community impacts, and transportation planning. 
  • CNU: Congress for a New Urbanism.  Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) is a San Francisco-based non-profit organization that was founded in 1993. CNU works with architects, developers, planners, and others involved in the creation of cities and towns, teaching them how to implement the principles of the New Urbanism. These principles include coherent regional planning, walkable neighborhoods, and attractive, accommodating civic spaces. CNU reports are available free of charge for printing or downloading. An image bank of the new urbanism is available for viewing. A list of recommended readings is included.
  • Cyburbia:  Internet Resources for the Built Environment.  Cyburbia, established in 1994, contains a large selective directory of Internet resources relevant to planning, architecture, urbanism, growth and sprawl, and other topics related to the built environment. A planning and architecture directory is included as well as current planning news.  Site has a search feature.
  • HomeSight. Homesight is an annotated and rated resource guide of housing agencies, policies, designs and publications available on the internet.
  • Institute for Housing and Urban Development. Site of the international training institute providing training, institutional development, advisory services, and research in the field of urban management, housing, and urban environment.
  • Living Room: a place for us all. Living Room is a place for exploring the history, the technology, and the sensations of community. This site provides information on urban and suburban design, transportation, modalities, habitat preservation, urban farming, social and environmental economics, and anything else related to the communities, human and otherwise, of the planet. 
  • Most Clearing House. Clearinghouse which provides access to reports and best practices in multicultural and multiethnic societies, urban studies and globalization. 
  • Resource for Urban Design Design Information. RUDI is a multimedia Internet resource for teaching, research and professional activity in urban design and its related disciplines. Urban design in this context includes the physical design, management, planning and use of buildings and landscape in terms of their relationship to public and open space. The service gathers and republishes multimedia material contributed by professional bodies, practitioners, academics and students. It also researches and creates new resources. Editorial policy focuses on examples of good practice in urban design, and aims to contribute to a better built environment. RUDI also provides web site hosting for organizations within the urban design community. This site provides bibliographies, case studies, design guides, journals and much more. Site can be searched.
  • Urban Environmental Management. This homepage is an output of UEMRI-The Urban Environmental Research Initiative. Offers links for resources on the Internet, documents, E-mail lists and a lot more.
  • Urban Institute. Site of the institute with objectives to sharpen thinking about society's problems and improve government decisions & their implementation. 
  • U.S. Housing and Urban Development. HUD's mission is to increase home ownership, support community development and increase access to affordable housing free from discrimination. Provides grants and publications pertaining to urban planning.
