Special Education Subject Guide

This subject guide covers special education resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles,  special education websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call  number are provided for print publications.


Full-Text Databases

  • ERIC E*Subscribe
  • Provides full-text online access to ERIC documents (ED's only) from 1996 to the present with abstracts available for ERIC documents from 1966 forward. However, E*Subscribe does not include full-text access to journal articles in its electronic collection.
     
  • InfoTrac OneFile
    A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics.
  • Mental Measurements Yearbook
    Contains full-text information about and the reviews of the all English-language standardized tests covering educational skills, personality, vocational aptitude, psychology, and related areas.

  • Proquest Education Journals
    Offers complete information on hundreds of educational topics covering almost 400 leading journals in the field.

Journal Indexes and Abstracts

  • Dissertation Abstracts
    Indexses and abstracts masters theses and dissertations including dissertations from Canada, Great Britain, and Europe, and the United States. 
  • ERIC - Index to Educational Materials 
  • Indexes and abstracts educational-related literature, including ERIC documents and ERIC journal articles from 1966 to the present. The ERIC Database consists of ERIC documents with an ED number (example: ED445152 ) and ERIC journal articles with an EJ number (example: EJ607522) . Select one of the following versions of the ERIC Database listed below.
     
  • PsychINFO
  • Indexes and abstracts international literature in psychology and related disciplines covering psychiatry, education, business, medicine, nursing, pharmacology, law, linguistics, and social work. 
     
  • Statistical Universe 
  • Allows users to search American Statistical Index, the latest edition of Statistical Abstracts of the United States, the Statistical Research Index, and Index to International Statistics. Includes full text of selected U.S. federal and state documents.

  • Provides a comprehensive classification of all recognized psychiatric disorders.

  • Two volume-set containing that describes psychological tests and measures developed for use with African-Americans.

  • Special Education Desk Reference

  • A multi-volume reference set of  test reviews used in the fields of psychology, education, and business.

  • Virginia Division of Instructional Support Services: Special Education
  • Provides information about recent developments, laws and regulations, Standards of Learning, and other documents on Special Education in Virginia.
     
  • Virginia Statistical Abstract
    This is the online version of the Virginia Statistical Abstract. Contains statistical data on Virginia's government, people, business and industry, natural resources, vital statistics, education, etc. Current copy of the printed publication is available at the Reference Desk and back issues in the Reference Collection.
