Public Administration Subject Guide

This subject guide covers public administration resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles,  public administration websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call  number are provided for print publications.

  • ABI-Inform. Features articles on business, finance, management, public administrations and political science.
  • Cambridge Journals Online. CJO indexes includes over 125 specialized journals from renowned research societies
    and associations in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Several public administration journals are included. Each journal in CJO has its own home page with links to the current and back volumes, as well as brief description of the journal's purpose, format, and content.
  • Congressional Universe (1970 to the present). U.S. legislative information, hearing
    transcripts, committee reports, bill tracking, Congressional Record, Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations, U.S.
    Code, Public Laws, the National Journal, Congress Daily, and member information.
  • CQ Researcher. Presents full-text articles on current social, political, economic, and international issues.
  • CQ Weekly Report. Offers in-depth full-text articles on U.S. Congressional legislation, actions, and developments.
  • Ethnic NewsWatch. Ethnic NewsWatch is a full-text collection of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press. A rich collection of articles,editorials, columns, reviews, etc. provide a broad diversity of perspectives and viewpoints -- the other sides of the stories. Free text searching and complete indexing makes Ethnic NewsWatch easy to search.
  • InfoTrac OneFile. A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers,
    current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art,
    politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles many
    with images. Updated daily.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe. Full-text coverage of U.S. newspapers, politics, policy issues, and legal information. Includes access to state and federal court cases as well as law reviews and legal news.
  • Project Muse. Provides full-text journal articles in the social sciences including public administration and political science.
  • Statistical Universe. Full-text database to U.S. statistical data and some international statistics. Features include
    searching the Power Tables for finding fast answers, searching summaries of statistical publications for comprehensive
    overview of documents or selecting links to other websites with information about statistics.


Journal Indexes and Abstracts

  • Dissertation Abstracts. Selectively covers masters theses and dissertations including dissertations from North
    American and Europe. Covers all subject disciplines. Covers 1861 to present and includes abstracts since 1988.
    Thesis abstracts have been included since 1988. Database is updated monthly.
  • GPO Monthly Catalog. The catalog is a search and retrieval service that provides bibliographic records of U.S.
    Government information products.
  • PAIS. Covers a range of political, social, and public policy issues in scholarly journals and books.
  • Sage Public Administration Abstracts. Provides cross-indexed abstracts covering recent literature on all aspects of public administration. Entries are drawn from books, articles, pamphlets, government publications, significant speeches, legislative research studies and other fugitive material.   • Biographical Dictionary of Public Administration. by Patricia Moss Wigfall.Greenwood Press, 2001. Complementing texts that introduce students to the major theories of public administration, this biographical dictionary introduces the
    reader to the individuals who originated or had a significant impact on those theories. Including subjects from a spectrum of disciplines and from such diverse areas as organizational theory, personnel, and budgeting, the book covers the original pioneers and their contemporaries.   • Municipal Year Book. International City Manager's Association, annual. Authoritative source book of local government data and developments. Location: Reference Collection, First Floor, Call Number: REF JS342.A2 I52.
  • Public Administration Dictionary. by William Fox. Juta & Co., 1995. Location: Reference Collection, First Floor, Call Number: REF JA61.F69.
  • State and Local Government Political Dictionary. by Jeffrey M. Elliot. ABC-CLIO, 1988. This work provides in-depth analysis of terms important to local government officials. Location: Reference Collection, First Floor, Call Number: REF JK2408.E44.

  • Academy of Management. Provides information on membership, journals, list servers, web sites, meetings and much more.
  • Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management. APPAM is dedicated to improving public policy and management by fostering excellence in research, analysis, and education. This website features job listings, grants, free newsletter, diversity initiatives and much more.
  • C-Span. C-Span is a public service created by the American cable television industry. Its purpose is to provide
    C-Span's audience access to the live gavel-to-gavel proceedings of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S.
    Senate, and to other forums where public policy is discussed, debated and decided-all without editing, commentary or
    analysis and with a balanced presentation of points of view.
  • Conference of Mayors. Founded during the throes of the Great Depression in 1932, the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM), was established to serve as the official nonpartisan organization of the nation's cities with populations of 30,000or more. Each city is represented in the conference by its chief elected official, and the primary roles of the USCM are to "promote the development of effective national urban/suburban policy, strengthen federal-city
    relationships, and ensure that federal policy meets urban needs." New visitors to the site will want to begin by browsing through the key programs section of the site, which delineates their main areas of programmatic interests -- such as dealing effectively with brownfield sites, urban regeneration schemes, and community policing (among a list of several
    dozen). While the site contains a number of working documents and project proposals and updates for consideration, the highlight here really is the extensive archive of webcasts from the group's annual conferences dating
    back to the year 2000.
  • Gallup Poll. Latest poll results on politics and education and the economy: social issues and policy, and lifestyle.
  • Governments on the WWW. This site offers links to official government information worldwide. For most nations
    there are links to a variety of their national offices.
  • National Academy of Public Administration. The National Academy of Public Administration is the preeminent organization dedicated to improving the performance of governance systems-the network of public institutions, nonprofit organizations, and private companies that share in the implementation of public policy. As an independent, nonprofit organization chartered by Congress, the Academy responds to specific requests from public agencies and non-government organizations. The Academy also promotes discourse on emerging trends in governance through its Standing Panels and with external funding.
  • National Association of Counties. The National Association of Counties (NACO) was created in 1935 when county officials wanted to have a strong voice in the nation's capital. More than six decades later, NACO continues to ensure that the nation's 3066 counties are heard and understood in the White House and the halls of Congress.
  • National Center for Public Productivity. The NCPP is a research and public service organization devoted to improving productivity in the public sector. The National Center's mission is to assist federal, state, local and not-for-profit agencies in further improving their capacity to provide quality services.
  • National League of Cities. The National League of Cities is the oldest and largest national organization representing municipal governments throughout the United States. Its mission is to strengthen and promote cities as centers of opportunity, leadership, and governance. Site features newsroom, publications, strategic plan, advocacy, and much more.
  • PAT NET. The Public Administration Theory Network is an international network of professional interested in the advancement of public administration theory. This organization provides a unique forum to discuss ideas in public administration and policy. Administration Theory & Praxis is the journal of PAT NET. It is full-text and can be downloaded without cost.
