PSYCHOLOGY SUBJECT GUIDE

This subject guide covers psychology resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles,  psychology websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call  number are provided for print publications.

Full-Text Databases
  • APA Full-Text Journal Articles. The American Psychological Association provides full-text articles, including experiments, from some of the top psychological journals. 
  • Expanded Academic ASAP.  From arts to the humanities to social sciences, science and technology, this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines.  Access scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers with full-text and images.
  • Oxford University Press. OUP publishes a wide range of respected and scholarly Psychology and Psychiatry journals. Key titles include Harvard Review of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy Research, Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice and Journal of Pediatric Psychology. Keyword searches can be done at this site. Good source for full-text articles on counseling.
  • Project Muse.  Provides access to the full-text of over 100 scholarly ournals in the arts and humanities, social sciences and mathematics.

  • ArticleFirst.  Citations to articles in the table of contents of journals covering many discipline including social science and popular culture.
  • Periodicals Contents Index.  PCI provides citations to articles in academic journals in humanities and social sciences from 18th century to 1990.
  • PscyINFO.  Produced by The American Psychological Association. The  most comprehensive source for bibliographic coverage of psychology and behavioral sciences literature; with special subset files ClinPSYC.
  • Statistical Universe. Full-text database to U.S. Statistical data and some international statistics.  Features include searching the Power Tables for finding fast answers, searching summaries of statistical publications for comprehensive overview of documents or selecting links to other websites with useful information about statistics.

    Provides thorough coverage of psychological terms, concepts, and research from a Christian point of view, 
    identifying the issues and applications of particular importance from that perspective and suggesting ways of evaluating the concepts, theories, and research findings in terms of biblical teachings.

    Encyclopedia of current knowledge in psychology and behavioral science. Cross-references are provided.

  • Dictionary of Psychology.  by Mike Cardwell. Fitzroy, 1999.
    Contains alphabetically arranged entries defining and explaining terms related to psychology, with extensive cross-referencing.

  • Dictionary of Psychology.  by Raymond J.Corsini. Brunner/Mazell, 1999.   This dictionary has approximately 30,000 entries.

  • Encyclopedia of Human Emotions. by David Levinson. Macmillan, 1999. 2 vols. This two-volume reference brings together information from the behavioral, social, biological, medical and physical sciences to summarize what is known today about the nature, causes, expressions and societal roles of human emotions throughout history and across cultures. The approximately 146 alphabetically-arranged articles written by active researchers cover specific emotions and behavioral expressions of emotions; conceptual, thematic, and theoretical issues; emotions in society and in the human experience; and biographies of well-known thinkers in the field.

  • Encyclopedia of Psychology. by Alan E. Kazdin. Oxford, 2000. 7 vols. This joint effort of the American Psychological Association and Oxford University Press has more than 1,500 alphabetically arranged, signed entries, including nearly 400 biographies.

  • APA PsychCrawler - The American Psychological Association (APA) developed PsychCrawler, a local area search engine--to provide rapid access to high quality psychological  information.

  • Classics in the History of Psychology - Compiles the full text of over 80 works considered classics in the history of psychology. Users may access the texts through an author  index or a topical index, which arranges the text into twelve subject areas: Ancient Psychology, Behaviorism, Cognition, Evolutionary Theory, Functionalism and Pragmatism, Gestalt Theory, Intelligence Testing, Neuropsychology, Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy, Social Psychology, Statistics & Methodology, and Wundt & Structuralism.

  • Community Psychology Network- A comprehensive, searchable guide to the field of community psychology, prevention, intervention, and action research.
  • Online Dictionary of Mental Health. The Online Dictionary of Mental Health is a global information resource and research tool covering all of the disciplines contributing to our understanding of mental health . The Dictionary is an exercise in democratic psychiatry in keeping with the traditions of the host site. Therefore there are no definitions here; instead there are links to many sites offering different viewpoints on issues in mental health, which are accessible using the A-Z links.

  • PsychArticle Search - This metasite indexes over 1,600 psychology and social science journals published in English, German, French, Dutch, and Spanish. Users can search the indexes by entering their search terms and selecting a database before launching the search. 

  • Psych Central - Dr. John Grohol's Mental Health Page - One of the most popular and oldest (1995) sites for psychology, support, and mental health issues, resources, and people. Editorials, live chat, discussion groups, daily news, online tests, and book reviews.
