Physical Education and Sports Subject Guide
This
subject guide covers physical education and sport resources available
at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine,
and newspaper articles, websites, and printed materials in the Reference
Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a
selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information
in this field. Library location and call number are provided for
print publications.

Wellness Resource Center Information on Fitness, Pregnancy,

- InfoTrac OneFile
A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range
of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education,
environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature
and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and
many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles many
with images. Updated daily.
- Proquest
Education Journals. Offering complete information on hundreds
of educational topics, this database covers almost 400 leading journals
in the field.
- PsychARTICLES.
Searchable full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific articles
in psychology.Coverage spans 1985 to present.

- CINAHL
Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature
- Dissertation
Abstracts Selectively covers masters theses and dissertations
including dissertations from North American and Europe. Covers
all subject disciplines. Covers 1861 to present and includes
abstracts since 1988. Thesis abstracts have been included since
1988. Database is updated monthly.
- ERIC
Journal articles and reports on education topics. Contains annotated
references to educational materials issued in the monthly Resources
in Education (RIE) and to journal articles issued in the monthly Current
Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). Indexes over 2,000 titles
and is updated monthly. Covers 1966 to present.
- MEDLINE (National
Library of Medicine) Articles from more than 3,800 international
biomedical journals. Covers 1966 to present.
- PsychINFO
Professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines
including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology,
physiology, linguistics, and other areas.
- SPORTDiscus
Serial and monographic literature in the following areas
of sport: recreation, exercise physiology, sports medicine, coaching,
physical fitness, the psychology, history and sociology of sport,
training, and conditioning.
Encyclopedias and Dictionaries
- Adapted Physical
Education National Standards by Luke Kelly, Project
Director. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics, 1995. This
reference to national standards of basic competency for adapted physical
education explains what professionals need to know to be qualified
as adapted physical educators. It presents standards in areas such
as human behavior, motor development, exercise science, learning,
instructional design and planning, teaching, ethics, and communication,
plus a glossary, and overviews the standards development process.

- African-American Athletes by Nathan Aaseng.
New York, NY: Facts on File, 2003. Since World War II,
African Americans have become recognized as competitors in such diverse
fields as baseball, boxing, football, track and field, gymnastics,
tennis, and golf. This book profiles more than 155 athletes. Biographical
entries concentrate on the events in each person's life related to
his or her accomplishments as an athlete and includes a list of further
reading on that person. An introduction, bibliography, subject indexes,
general index, and 50 photographs round out the resource. Reference

- Encyclopedia
of Women and Sports by Victoria Sherrow. Santa
Barbara, CA: ABC-CLIO, 1996. This encyclopedia includes a good
introduction to the history of women in sports. Entries often
focus on individual achievements of the athlete but attention is always
given to the socio-cultural aspects of women in sports. This
title includes biographical entries as well as discussion of individual
sports and how women have impacted them. Reference GV709.S44

- Encyclopedia
of World Sport by David Levinson and Karen Christensen,
editors. Santa Barbara, CA: ABC-CLIO, 1996. This three
volume set is organized alphabetically by the names of sports. Each
entry includes a history and development of the sport as well as its
organization, equipment, and social aspects. Reference GV567.E56

- WWW Virtual Library: SPORT
This site is a directory of sports web sites, arranged in categories
by sport. Listing are extensive and the pages listed can be of limited
utility.
- Gender Equity in Sport
This site is designed as a resource for individuals investigating
the state of affairs in interscholastic or intercollegiate sport.
The content and data are based on a three year project maintained
at The University of Iowa. This is an excellent site, well arranged,
and includes a large table of contents, with indexes.
- Physical Education Central This
is a web site for physical education teachers, students, interested
parents and adults. Designed and maintained by Virginia Tech's Health
and Physical Education Program, it provides the latest information
about contemporary physical education programs for children and youth.
Included are activities, lesson ideas, assessment ideas, professional
information, web sites, guides, and a listserv.
- Sport Management Information
Centre This site offers some general information, association
listings, web site links, graduate programs in the field, conference
announcements, newsletters, conference abstracts, and listservs. It
is a great resource for a student or faculty member in this field.
- SportQuest This site,
sponsored by the SIRC, is a research and education tool designed to
facilitate the retrieval of the best sport information offered by
the Web: olympic, winter, water, and professional sports; coaching;
statistics and results; sports medicine; individual sports. The "Sports
Science" link provides information on sports psychology, sociology
of sport, physical education sites, training and coaching, and a number
of other areas.
- Sportscience This site is
a professional level electronic resource for sport researchers. Original
articles, proceedings, discussion lists, internet resources, and a
forthcoming journal are all features of this site.
- SportSite This is a marketing site.
It is a directory of companies that specialize in sports equipment.
A search engine allows the user to pick a sport, a type of equipment,
and then see a list of company web sites.
- Therapeutic Recreation
Directory The site includes information ranging from
an e-mail directory of professionals, a job resources center, 22 bulletin
boards on various topics, and a number of directories.
