Philosophy Subject Guide

This subject guide covers philosophy resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles,  philosophy websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call  number are provided for print publications.

Full-Text Databases

  • Cambridge Journals Online. Includes over 125 specialized journals from renowned research societies and associations in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Several philosophy journals are included. Each journal in CJO has its own home page with links to the current and back volumes, as well as brief description of the journal's purpose, format, and content.
  • Infotrac Onefile. A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Indexes over twenty philosophy journals. Updated daily.
  • Oxford University Press Journals. Online access to full-text Oxford University Press Journals in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, and the sciences. Indexes several titles in the area of philosophy.
  • Project Muse. Project Muse. Project Muse provides online, worldwide, institutional subscription access to the full-text of over 100 scholarly journals in the arts and humanities, social sciences and mathematics. Several full-text philosophy journals are available.

  Journal Indexes and Abstracts
  • Art and Humanities Search. Indexes the world's leading arts and humanities journals. Includes some related social and science information. Indexes over 1,300 sources and is updated weekly.
  • Dissertation Abstracts. Selectively covers masters theses and dissertations including dissertations from North American and Europe. Covers all subject disciplines. Covers 1861 to present and includes abstracts since 1988. Thesis abstracts have been included since 1988. Database is updated monthly.
  • Philosopher's Index. The Philosopher's Index is a bibliographic database with informative, author-written abstracts covering scholarly research in all areas of philosophy. The literature includes journal articles, books, book chapters such as contributions to an anthology, and book reviews and covers 1940 to the present. The Philosopher's Index monitors journals from more than 40 countries and is updated quarterly. Extensive indexing includes personal and proper names along with subject terms; there is also the capability to search for the authors of book reviews.

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

  • Blackwell Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Social Thought. (Electronic Book) by William Outhwaite. Blackwell Publishers, 1994. Twentieth-century social thought ranges widely from the social sciences to philosophy, political theories and doctrines, cultural ideas and movements, and the influence of the natural sciences. This Dictionary provides a comprehensive overview of the main themes of social thought, principal schools and movements of thought, and those institutions that have been the subject of social analysis or engendered significant doctrines and ideas.
  • Companion to the Philosophers. by Robert L. Arrington. Blackwell Publishers, 1998. Location: Reference Dept., 1st floor,. Call Number: REF B72.C595. This work surveys the major philosophical thinkers in Western and non-Western traditions.
  • Dictionary of Philosophy and Religion. by William Reese. Humanities Press, 1996. Location: Reference Dept., 1st floor. Call Number: REF B41.R43. With more than 4,000 entries, the dictionary delves into Continental and Asian philosophies and religions, and provides biographies of more than 900 ancient, medieval, and modern philosophers. It's erudite, inclusive, accessible, and covers the major philosophers.
  • Encyclopedia of Philosophy. by Paul Edwards, Macmillan Publishing Co., 1967, 8 vols. Location: Reference Dept., 1st floor. Call Number: REF B41.E5. Easy to understand articles on all aspects of philosophy.
  • World Philosophers and Their Works. by John R. Roth. Salempress, 2000, 3 vols. Location: Reference Dept., lst floor. Call Number: REF B104.W67. This three volume set examines in 231 alphabetically arranged chapters, 226 of the greatest world philosophers of all time. Written with the needs of students and general readers in mind, the chapters present clear introductory discussions of the philosophers and their works.
  • World Philosophy, Essay-Reviews of 225 Major Works. By Frank N. Magill. Salem Press, 1982, 5 vols. Location: Reference Dept., 1st floor. Call Number: REF B29.W68. This work provides substantial scholarly examinations of most of the key works needed to examine the major trends in world philosophy.

  • American Philosophical Association. The American Philosophical Association is the organization that sponsors the exchange of ideas, freedom of thought, research in the study of philosophical texts, conferences on topics, events, and figures in philosophy, and recent discoveries and findings in philosophical study.
  • Episteme Links. Provides sorted links to many kinds of philosophy resources, including full-text works of many philosophers, access to journals and important journal information, web pages of professors and students, and much more.
  • Ethics Update. Ethics Updates is designed primarily to be used by ethics instructors and their students. It is intended to provide updates on current literature, both popular and professional, that relates to ethics.
  • Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Articles currently from three sources (1) adaptations from public domain sources, (2) adaptations of material written by the editor, James Fieser, "for classroom purposes", and (3) original contributions by "professional philosophers around the Internet".
  • Perseus Project. Impressive collection of sources relating to studies of antiquity, including original texts of many important works.
  • Philosophy in Cyberspace. Extensive list of websites for all things having to do with philosophy, divided into convenient sub-directories.
  • Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. In this dynamic reference work each entry is maintained and kept up to date by an expert or group of experts in the field. All entries and updates are refereed by the editoral board before they are entered into the encyclopedia. The encyclopedia is always in the process of being revised and updated. The site has a search feature and in depth explanations of terms are provided.
