Dietetics and Nutrition Subject Guide

This subject guide covers dietetics and nutrition resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles, dietetics and nutrition websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call number are provided for print publications.

Full-Text Databases

  • Cambridge Journals Online. CJO indexes includes over 125 specialized journals from renowned research societies and associations in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Dietetic and nutrition journals are included. Each journal in CJO has its own home page with links to the current and back volumes, as well as brief description of the journal's purpose, format, and content.
  • Highwire Press. Full-text journal articles in in the areas of biological science, medical science, physical science, and social science.
  • InfoTrac OneFile. A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: anthropology, business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, nutrition, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles many with images. Updated daily.
  • Nutrition and Food Sciences.. This online database provides access to an extensive amount of information for: nutrition and food research scientists, nutrition teachers and students, dieticians, clinical nutritionists, food industry professionals, and animal production specialists. Indexes journals, materials from books, proceedings, theses and reports. Nutritiongate.com includes: daily international news, reviews and Spotlight articles, a calendar of forthcoming conferences and meetings, an international jobs section, and a book section. The subject coverage for Nutritiongate.com includes all aspects of human and animal nutrition, including: food and feed composition, functional foods, nutrient metabolism and metabolic studies, methodology, dietary surveys and epidemiology, clinical and therapeutic nutrition, gene expression, obesity, nutritional disorders of livestock, feed technology, and farm animals (including fish) as well as domestic animals, game and zoo animals.

Journal Indexes and Abstracts

  • AGRICOLA. AGRICOLA is a bibliographic database consisting of literature citations for journal articles, monographs, proceedings, theses, patents, and technical reports pertaining to all aspects of agriculture including nutrition. Covers 1979 to present and is updated monthly.
  • MEDLINE. Medline covers all areas of medicine, including clinical medicine, experimental medicine, nutrition and much more. Coverage: 1966 to present.
  • PUBMED. PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.
  • TOXLINE. This database covers journal literature on air pollution, antidotes, the biological and adverse effects of drugs, carcinogensis via chemicals, chemically induced diseases, environmental chemicals and pollutants, food additives, genotoxicty, hazardous materials health and safety, human and animal toxicity, industrial and household chemicals, pesticides, and radioactive materials.

This encyclopedia is for all consumers-for everyone who seeks good health, and for those who counsel with them-physicians, dentists, nutritionists, health experts, and others in allied fieldsIt contains authoritative articles about foods and nutrition and their relationship to health.   • Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition. Chief editor Michele Sadler. Academic Press, 1999, 3 vols. Presents the physiological aspects of nutrient and energy requirements by different population groups, measurement of dietary intake; nutrient composition of the main food groups; relationships between diet, lifestyle and disease, nutritional guidelines and public health policies.   • Nutrition and Health Dictionary. by Percy J. Russell. Chapman and Hall, 1995.This dictionary connects the technical languages among disciplines related to nutrition. The dictionary has been written in the language and style familiar to scientists, but the the aim of the author was to make all items understandable to any reader interested in nutrition.   • Oxford Companion to Food. by Alan Davidson. Oxford University Press, 1999. Presents the history and use of food. Location: First Floor, Reference Area, Call number: REF TX349.D36.

Internet Websites

  • American Dietetic Association. The home page of this organization provides member service, nutrition resources, FAQ's, and a "hot topics" link. The goal is to promote optimal nutrition, health and well being. This site is updated frequently.

  • Arbor Nutrition Guide. Clinical Nutrition has material on nutrition in medicine, nutritional diseases and high risk groups. Applied Nutrition deals with resources in areas such as dietetics, public health, lay and patent information, alternative medicine, nutrition education, journals and multimedia. Food Science contains links on food composition, food food science and food safety, whilst Food has material on eating and dining, the food industry and food service.
  • Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. CNPP was created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1994, and is the focal point within USDA for scientific research linked to the nutritional needs of the public. Site has wide variety of nutrition information, from dietary guidelines & an interactive healthy eating index to full-text reports such as "Expenditures on Children by Families" & "Nutritional Status of WIC Participants Study."
  • Martindales's Health Science Guide. This directory of information on nutrition offers access to literature and patent searches, dictionaries and glossaries, and online nutrition calculators. It also contains information on food science, labeling, food safety, and recipes.
  • Nutrition Analysis Tools for Good Health. A free program for nutritional analysis provided as a public service by the University of Illinois. Data comes from the USDA and food companies and includes fast foods and foods by brand name.
  • Nutrition.gov. This federal resource is a guide offering easy access to all government Web sites with reliable and accurate information on nutrition and dietary guidance. It provides information on prevention of food-related diseases (diabetes, cancer, heart disease, obesity, the food pyramid, food labels, health management, recipes, and other topics. Additionally, it links to nutrition and food assistance programs and to "federally supported research, reports, and brochures as well as funding opportunities in the federal government.
  • Nutrition Navigator. This site from Tufts University reviews and evaluates nutrition Web sites on content and usability.
  • USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory. Access to food composition databases, information on food labeling, dietary guidelines and supplements, recommended dietary allowances and resource materials for school personnel.
