Arts Subject Guide
This
subject guide covers graphic arts resources available at the Johnston
Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper
articles, graphic arts websites, and printed materials in the Reference
Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective
list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this
field. Library location and call number are provided for print publications.

- DAAI:
Design and Applied Index. DAAI is an index to journal articles
published in craft and design journals since 1973. It is an index that
contains references and abstracts (summaries) only, not full text. DAAI
covers all areas of design and art with a particular emphasis on the
crafts and applied arts, including: ceramics, graphics, fashion, textiles,
photography, typography, printmaking, jewelry, and architecture.

Dictionary of Art Online. Full-text articles with images
on every aspect of the visual arts - painting, sculpture,graphic arts,
architecture, decorative arts and photography - from the prehistory
to the present day.

OneFile. A one-stop source for news and periodical articles

Indexes several art encyclopedias and dictionaries. Includes the Bridgeman
Art Library Archive. It is the world's leading source of art images,
representing museums, galleries and artists throughout the world by
providing a central source of fine art images.

arts and humanities journals. Includes some related social and science
information. Indexes over 1,300 sources and is updated weekly.

and Dictionaries
- Glossary
of Graphic Communications. by Pamela J. Groff. Graphic ArtsTechnical
Foundation, 3rd. ed., 1997. This work contains over 3,500 internet
and computer networking terminology with technical print-publishing
terms. It also lists frequently used computer file extensions, common
abbreviations, and acronyms. An extensive bibliography is included.

- Modern
Encyclopedia of Typefaces, 1960-90. by Lawrence W. Wallis.
Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1990. This is an encyclopedia of typeface specimens
of a particular period and scope. Location: Referene Collection,

- Prentice
Hal Graphic Communications Dictionary.
by Daniel J. Lyons. Prentice-Hall, Inc., 2000. This work is a guide
through the words we use and misuse in nearly all areas of graphics,
with delineation for the multiple definitions. A valuable resource
for both veterans of the industry and students of any area of graphic

- TypEncyclopedia.
by Frank J. Romano. R. R. Bowker. 1984. This book is a user's guide
to better typography. Location: Reference Collection, First

Graphic Design. Graphic Design Resources
Directory is a Graphic Design Portal with Graphics Resources and Desktop
Publishing Directory of DTP resources including Graphic Design Image
Editing Shareware, Graphic Design Message Boards, and much more.
- Arcadia
Animations. This site contains
over 550 royalty-free animated GIFs and backgrounds, all with thumbnail
images. These resources are divided into various categories such as
animals, cartoons, logos, text, backgrounds, and are available for
downloading. There is also a section called the 'Animation Factory',
which contains free animations, web graphics, and clip art items,
again divided into various categories.
- BigNoseBird.
This site has information for creating and maintaining web sites.
There are over 200 pages of original tutorial covering a wide range
of subjects and including free scripts and graphics. There is a section
on web development issues containing news and updates, and a section
on coordinated graphics sets which contains free image sets to give
a uniform look to web pages and are available for downloading. A free
graphics section has icons, buttons, backgrounds, bullets, and there
is a section on HTML tricks, JavaScript tricks, navigation tutorials,
and image maps tutorials. Other sections include a design and style
section containing advice and hints, and a website management section,
and a resource links and tools section.
- Communications
Arts. An extensive online resource for creative professionals
to enhance their work and careers and a catalyst for bringing community
to visual communicators around the world.
- Computer
Graphics World Magazine. Explores visual computing techniques
and innovations including 3D modeling, animation, visualization, rendering,
simulation and applications such as MCAD/CAM/CAE for engineers, designers
and animators. Brings you daily updates and news in the related industries
as well as access to five yeas of editorial features.
- Design
and Publishing Center.
The online Center for Visual Communications:
graphics, writing, typography, printing, publishing, advertising,
printing, publishing, advertising, signs, displays, and anyone involved
in the design and publishing fields.
- Design,
Type and Graphics. Design, Typography & Graphics with tips
and tricks for design, printing, photography and publishing of all
kinds.
- Dezine
Cafe. This site is the internet hangout for graphic designers.
This site bills itself as a place for conversation, inspiration, and
food for thought.
- Dmitry's
Design Lab. These articles written by Dmitry Kirsanov are
for everyone interested in the important basics of design proper---design
as art and science. Such design essentials as color, fonts, shape,
texture, dynamism, the principles of using artwork, photography, and
animation, plus some more specific issues such as web site navigation
or logo design, are treated in detail and illustrated by case web
design projects.
- Graphic
Arts Monthly. This magazine covers the printing and graphic
arts industries, news and trends in printing technology and graphic
arts products and services. Covers new product announcements, industry
news, event calendar, and includes a searchable database of editorial
articles.
- Graphic
Design Resources. Sponsored by the International Association
of Printing House Craftsmen. This site contains links to a variety
of interesting graphic arts websites.
- PrintUSA.
Site features free printing quotes from multiple vendors, useful information
on graphics and printing services, classified Printing Equipment Wanted
and Printing Equipment For Sale ads plus web addresses of printers
in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Hosts printing industry web
sites.
- TypoFile.
This site is about the use of type and typography,
and contains a number of articles about type-related issues. There
is a new typefaces section, and a tutorial covering the choosing and
using of typefaces. A technology section contains software reviews,
there is a list of type foundries, an opinion section with articles,
articles about web fonts, and articles about other type-related subjects.
