Grants Management Subject Guide

This subject guide covers grants management resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles,  grants management websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call  number are provided for print publications. 
 


Government Resources

  • Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) is a vast compendium providing key data for U.S. federal government programs, projects, services, and activities which provide assistance to the general public.
  • Federal Register. The official source for all rules and regulations published by federal agencies, over 60,000 pages a year, as well as agency notices concerning new grants, changes in grant programs. etc.
  • Government Gateway (for State and Local Governments). Thousands of grants and loans are made by the federal government to state and local governments and other public entities. This site provides one-stop access to Grants Management and Federal Assistance Programs, in addition to resources about Acquisition and Procurement, Financial Management and Taxes.
  • Grants.gov. This site allows organizations to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies.
  • National Endowment for the Humanities. The NEH is a federal agency supporting programs and funding research in areas of the humanities such as history, literature, and philosophy. There is a listing by state of NEH-funded programs and exhibits. Information is given on the application process for grants and what projects are eligible for funding, such as: educational opportunities for teachers; museum and library exhibits; and film, television and radio programs.
  • National Science Foundation. The NSF funds research and education in science and engineering, through grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements. The Foundation accounts for about 20 percent of federal support to academic institutions for basic research.
  • SRA International Grants Web. The best source on the web for finding all funds available from local, state, federal and international governments.
  • U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Affairs. HUD awards grants to organizations and groups for a variety of purposes. The site will connect you with HUD's Grant Office and provides an overview of the Department's funding programs.


Private Resources

  • Foundation Center. The foundation Center's mission is to support and improve institutional philanthropy by promoting public understanding of the field and helping grant seekers succeed. To achieve their mission they collect, organize, and communities information on U.S. philanthropy.
  • Grants Net. One-stop resource to find funds for training in the sciences and undergraduate science.
  • Social Science Research Council (SSRC). A not-for-profit international organization that seeks to advance social science throughout the world and supports research, education and scholarly exchange on every continent. The Web site has information on the group's fellowships, grants, programs, and other activities. There are also links to other organizations, research funding sources, and general resources for the social sciences.
  • Welcome to GrantsDirect.Com. A searchable database offered by jankowski Associates for finding and researching grants from foundations.

Foundation Directory is the definitive annual reference source for information about private and community grantmaking foundations in the United States.   • GrantFinder. St. Martin's Press, 2000. Complete guide to postgraduate funding worldwide. Location: Reference Collection, First Floor, Call Number: REF Q181.G596.
  • Smithsonian Opportunities for Research and Study in History, Art, Science. Smithsonian Institution Press, 2000. This book is published to provide information about the Smithsonian Institution's fellowship. Location: Reference Collection, First Floor Collection, First Floor, Call Number: REF Q11.S8 S86.

  • Council on Foundations. A Nonprofit Membership Association of Grantmaking Foundations. Useful information on foundations, includes "Seeking a Grant?" page.
  • The Foundation Center. "Your Gateway to Philanthropy on the World Wide Web" - includes free newsletters, access to selected free libraries.
  • Grantsmart. Useful for grant seekers, philanthropic organizations looking for other organizations with similar projects, or individual donors wishing to see how private foundations spend their money. The most valuable feature is the "searchable Database of tax-related information for each of the over 60,000 private foundations that file Form 990-PF with the IRS.
  • Grants R' Us. This site contains grant writing information and funding links to federal, state and foundation sites.
  • Non-Profit Guides. Grant Writing Tools for Non-Profit Organizations. An overview of grant writing, with sample proposal summaries, inquiry letters, cover letters, and applications. The site is "specifically designed to assist established, experienced private and public non-profit organizations and entities.
  • Search Engine for Proposal Writing. At this site you can search for Government Contracting, Grants, Small and Disadvantaged Business, International Bids and Tenders, and International Development . The directory of annotated links is the most useful content of an extensive site created by an independent grant consultant. The directory can be searched or browsed and covers government grants and loans, grant writing, international grants and procurement, government contracting, and small and minority business.
