Leadership Subject Guide
This
subject guide covers educational leadership resources available at
the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine,
and newspaper articles, educational leadership websites, and printed
materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive
subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most
useful for locating information in this field. Library location and
call number are provided for print publications.

- Chronicle
of Higher Education.
News and information on the academic world, including reports of current
events and issues, developments in information technology, and job opportunities.
Includes the full current issue and 10 years of archives.
- Congressional Universe. The world's most
comprehensive access to U.S. legislative information from Congressional Information
Service, Inc. The service offers access to a variety of information by and
about the United States Congress. With Congressional Universe, you can:
1) Search an index of congressional publications from 1970 to the present,
2) Retrieve CIS Legislative Histories for public laws going back to 1970,
3) Find testimony from congressional hearings; 4) Track bills as they move
through the House and Senate; 5) Search the Congressional Record and Federal
Register; and 6) Locate information about members and committees.
- CQ Researcher. Presents
full-text articles on current social, political, economic, and international
issues.
- CQ Weekly Report. Offers in-depth
full-text articles on U.S. Congressional legislation, actions, and developments.
- InfoTrac OneFile.
A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics:
business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues,
health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science,
social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions
of full-text articles many with images. Updated daily.
- Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe. Provides
access to a wide range of legal, business, news, and reference information,
including many full-text sources. Its coverage includes magazines,
journals and law
reviews, newspapers, state and federal laws, court rulings and reference sources.
- Mental
Measurement Yearbook. The Mental Measurements Yearbook, from
Buros Institute, contains descriptive information and critical reviews from
the Buros Institute's 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th Yearbooks. The
database covers more than 2,200 commercially available tests in categories
such as behavioral assessment, achievement, intelligence and aptitude, speech
and hearing, and sensory motor. Each entry includes test name and classification;
author(s); publisher and publication date; price; time requirements; score
descriptions; levels; and intended populations. Mental Measurements Yearbook
is updated every six months to ensure timely access to new test information
and to eliminate out?dated descriptions and reviews when new ones are available.
A valuable resource for academic libraries, the Yearbook provides a convenient
tool for educators, counselors, psychologists, personnel directors, lawyers,
and medical professionals to locate and evaluate testing instruments.
- ProQuest
Education Journals. This database offers complete information
on hundreds of educational topics. This database covers almost 400 leading
journals in the field, including journals such as Childhood Education, College
Teaching, Harvard Educational Review, Journal of Athletic Training, Educational
Theory, and Urban Education. Full text articles include all the charts, tables,
diagrams and other graphical elements. Coverage includes literature on primary,
secondary, and higher education, special education, home schooling, adult
education, and related topics.
Natural language searching, database segmenting, and conceptual smart searching
are just a few of the features that help users find the information they need
quickly and easily. Users may search by keyword, topic guide (subject directory),
or journal publication.

- Dissertation
Abstracts.
Selectively covers masters thesis and dissertations including dissertations
from North American and Europe. Covers all subject disciplines.
Covers 1861 to present and includes abstracts since 1988. Thesis abstracts
have been included since 1988. Database is updated monthly.
- ERIC.
Journal articles and reports on education topics. Contains annotated
references to educational
materials
issued in the monthly Resources in Education (RIE) and to journal articles issued
in the monthly Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). Indexes
over 2,000 titles and is updated monthly. Covers 1966 to present.

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries
- American
Educators' Encyclopedia. by Edward J. Dejnozka. New York, Greenwood
Press, 1991. This encyclopedia was written to provide school administrators,
teachers, teacher educators, school board members, graduate students,
librarians, parents and others interested in American education with a ready
(one-volume) reference book. The principal portion of this work consists
of almost 2,000 entries (short articles that are based on the names and terms
frequently found in the literature of professional education). Reference

- Encyclopedia
of Educational Research. Marvin C. Alkin. New York, Simon &
Schuster, 1992. This work was designed as a major work of scholarship
to enlighten and guide readers on matters relating to educational research.
This encyclopedia provides an overview of a specific area of research, with
references providing a point of embarkation for further study. Insights
into educational practice are discussed. Location: Reference Collection,

- Handbook
of Research on Educational Administration: A Project of the American
Educational Research Association. by Joseph Murphy. San Francisco:
Jossey-Bass Publishers, 1999. The book's content is limited to administering
elementary and secondary schools. Subjects covered include the development
of educational administration, the changing nature of education and schooling
and emerging foundations for the new profession, and rethinking the challenges

- American
Association of School Administrators.
AASA mission is to support and develop effective school system leaders
who are dedicated to the highest quality public education for all children.
Categories include government relations, education marketplace, scholarships,
and education issues. Articles from the following publications: Leadership
News, School Administrator and many more are available. A search feature
is available at this site.
- Annenberg Institute
for School Reform: Educational Leadership. AISR main focus is
on identifying, shaping, and promoting effective forms of educational leadership.
Programs in this area seek to build the capacity of schools and their communities
to access and meet the leadership needs specific to improving education in
their school communities. This site features such topics as leadership, accountability,
community assets, and comprehensive school reform.
- Council of Chief State School Officers.
A nationwide, nonprofit organization, CCSSO is composed of public officials
who lead the departments responsible for elementary and secondary education
in the states, the US extra-state jurisdictions, the District of Columbia
and the Department of Defense Education Activity. In representing the
chief education offices, CCSSO works on behalf of the state agencies that
serve pre K-12 students throughout the nation. Features of this website
include policy statements, publications, news releases, federal legislative
positions and implementation of federal programs.
- Directory of Organizations in Educational
Management. The purpose of the Directory is to guide users to sources
of information on a wide range of topics related to educational policy, management,
leadership, and organization of K-12 schools. The Directory lists service
and research organizations in this field. For each organization, the Directory
gives the title, director's name, phone and fax numbers, address, purpose,
scope of subject area, topics of publications, service policy, and other information.
- Education
Commission of the States. The purpose of the ECS is to help
state leaders identify, develop and implement public policy for education
that addresses current and future needs of a learning society. This
site features education issues. A comprehensive picture is provided
for each issue as well as a list of publications and websites dealing with
the issue.
- Institute
for Educational Leadership. IEL is a non-profit, nonpartisan
organization based in Washington, D.C. -- has provided policy and leadership
assistance to people and institutions since 1964. The Institute
for Educational Leadership's (IEL) mission is to improve education -- and
the lives of children and their families -- through positive and visionary
change. The institute endeavors to bring together diverse constituencies and
empower leaders with knowledge and applicable ideas. Features of this
site include free publications available for downloading, a description of
programs and fellowships offered.
- Leaders Count Initiative.
The Wallace-Readers's Digest Funds have developed a broad record of support
for education and literacy. They are now undertaking a national movement
aimed at elevating quality education leadership as a core element of school
reform, with a multimillion dollar investment to support this movement.
This website has multiple resources, newsletters and information about education
leadership.
- National Academy for Academic
Leadership. The National Academy for Academic Leadership educates
academic decision makers to be leaders for sustained, integrated institutional
change that significantly improves student learning. Its curriculum is based
on research and best practices. Its programs are designed both for institutional
teams working on campus projects and for individuals--presidents, board members,
vice presidents, deans, chairs and key faculty members--with role-specific
responsibilities and concerns. The National Academy recognizes the considerable
variation among institutions in their readiness for change and their resources
for leadership development, and so programs are geared to the unique institutional
contexts and specific needs of participants.
- National Association of Elementary
School Principals. The mission of NAESP is to
lead in the advocacy and support for elementary and middle level principals
and other education leaders in their commitment to all children. Features
include career center, leadership topics, professional development, resources
and much more. Site can be searched.
- National
Association of Secondary School Principles.
NASSP mission is to promote excellence
in school leadership. A wide variety of programs and services are provided
to assist in administration, supervision, curriculum planning and effective
staff development. Features include research articles from NASSP Bulletin
and Principal Leadership as well as many other publications. A search
feature is available at this site.
- National
School Boards Association. The mission of the National School
Boards Association, working
with and
through all of its Federation Members, is to foster excellence and equity in
public education through school board leadership.
- School Law: Trends
and Issues. This school law page is compiled by the Eric Clearinghouse
on Educational Management. The database features Clearinghouse
publications, ERIC Digests, references, resources and links.
- Trends and
Issues: Educational Leadership. This database is maintained
by the ERIC Clearinghouse on Educational Management. The database features
a discussion of the topic, a list of references and resources. Site
includes Clearinghouse publications, ERIC Digests, and other organizations
resources.
