Economics Subject Guide

This subject guide covers economic resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine and newspaper articles, and  economic websites. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call number are provided for print publications.

  • ABI/INFORM
  • Covers nearly every aspect of business, including company histories and new product development. Includes abstracts and indexes of significant articles from nearly 1,000 current business and management periodicals. Provides access to selected full-text  articles. 
  • CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online)
    A comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs, including working papers, books, journals, policy briefs, and economic indicators from Conference Board.

  • Factiva (formerly Dow Jones Interactive)
    Provides financial, historical, and product information for publicly traded companies worldwide, full-text magazine and journal articles, and current and historical stock quotes.
     
  • InfoTrac OneFile
  • A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, etc.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
  • Provides access to a wide range of domestic and international news, business, and legal information sources, including legislative, government, company, financial and demographic information, market research, and industry reports.
     
  • MathSciNet
    Provides web access to Mathematical Reviews and Current Mathematical Publications. Includes publications covering mathematics, statistics, operations research, and econometrics.
     
  • Mergent Online
    Index of real-time EDGAR (SEC) filings, providing the ability to select a needed document, view it and print it. All financials "as reported", providing unparalleled review of balance sheets, income statements, expenditures, assets, liabilities, cash flow, performace trends, and more.

  • Oxford University Press Journals
    Online access to full-text Oxford University Press Journals in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, and the sciences, including economics and business.
  • Thomson Research (formerly Global Access)
    Contains information from SEC filings and corporate annual reports. Includes financial and management information for more than 12,000 public companies trading on major U.S. exchanges.

  • EconoLit
  • Provides citations and selected abstracts of worldwide literature on economics, including books, dissertations, working papers, conference proceedings, and book reviews. Topics include economic development, forecasting, and history, fiscal theory, monetary theory and financial institutions, business finance, public finance, etc.
     
  • PAIS International
  • Contains abstracts of journal articles, books, statistical yearbooks, directories, conference proceedings, research reports and government documents. Topics covered include economic, political and social issues, business, finance, law, international trade and relations, public administration, and much more.

  • Economic Indicators
    Monthly issues of Economic Indicators, prepared for the Joint Economic Committee by the Council of Economic Advisers, consist of tables of United States economic indicators. Coverage from 1995 forward.
  • Economic Indicators.com
  • The author of  The Handbook of Key Economic Indicators has created a website for tracking current news on economic indicators and other facets of the current economy. 
  • STAT-USA: State of the Nation
  • Provides various financial and economic data from throughout the federal government and other related entities, including general economic indicators, housing and construction sales and permits, monetary statistics, manufacturing and industry information, employment, and economic policy. 
     
  • Statistical Abstract of the United States
  • An extensive selection of statistics for the United States, with selected data for States, metropolitan areas, cities, and foreign countries from reports and records of government and private agencies.
     
  • Statistical Universe  
  • Allows users to search American Statistical Index, the latest edition of Statistical Abstracts of the United States, the Statistical Research Index, and Index to International Statistics. Includes full text of selected U.S. federal and state documents.

  • Bureau of Economic Analysis
    Prepares national, regional, industry, and international accounts that present essential information on such key issues as economic growth, regional economic development, inter-industry relationships, and the Nation's position in the world economy. 
     
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics
    Offers statistical data on employment, prices, consumer expenditures, productivity, and working conditions. 

  • This section of the Conference Board contains leading economic indicators and other non-government data.
     
  • Economic Census Data
    Provides a detailed portrait of the Nation's economy once every five years, from the national to the local level. Coverage includes all of the U.S. economy in its basic collection of establishment statistics (retail and wholesale trade, construction, manufacturing, transportation, governments, real estate, and finance and insurance).

  • Contains statistical tables on the economic condition of the United States covering National income or expenditure, population, employment, wages, and productivity, production and business activity, government finance, corporate profits and finance, agriculture , and international statistics . You can download the entire report from previous years in PDF format (1995-forward) as well as access the statistical tables from Appendix B of the report as spreadsheet files (1997-forward). Current year statistical tables may be viewed separately as Excel spreadsheet files.
     
  • Monthly publication published by the Federal Reserve Board containing reports and analysis of the U.S. economy.
     
  • Collection of statistical releases such as daily releases of commercial paper rates and selected interest rates, and weekly releases on reserves, money stocks and debt measures, assets and liabilities of commercial banks, etc.
     
  • FRED: Federal Reserve Economic Data
     Data for the U.S. include time series on: interest rates, loans, money supply, bank deposits, bank reserves, gross domestic product, business inventories, corporate profiles, employment cost index, exports, federal debt, federal government expenditures, federal government receipts, savings, personal income, retail sales, personal expenditures,  industrial capacity utilization, national income, consumer price index, producer price index, employment, and foreign exchange rates.

  • Links to working papers from hundreds of series and published research in the area of economics. Includes descriptive and/or abstract information about the papers, JEL (Journal of Economic Literature) classification, and the full text of the papers themselves (in various formats).
     
  • Contains monthly, quarterly, and annual economic time series and data set covering production, construction, employment, etc.
     
  • North American Industrial Classification System
    Provides detailed industry definitions for 350 new industries and replaces the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system.

  • View standard graphs, tables, and maps depicting economic conditions and observe how they have changed over time. Statistics are listed in these categories: Industry Activity, Employment and Income, and Real Estate Activity.
     
  • Standard Industrial Classification System
    Allows the user to search the 1987 version SIC manual by keyword, to access descriptive information for a specified 4-digit SIC.

  • Monthly compendium of articles and statistics about state, regional, and U.S. business and economic conditions. Includes monthly Business Situation section that discusses topics such as prices, personal income, consumption, exports and imports, and government spending. Presents selected regional, national, and international tables, including National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA), Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and Foreign Direct Investment in the United States.
