Criminal Justice Subject Guide

This subject guide covers criminal justice resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles,  criminal justice  websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call  number are provided for print publications.

  • Factiva Provides financial, historical, and product information for publicly traded companies worldwide, full-text magazine and journal articles, and current and historical stock quotes.

  • InfoTrac OneFile
  • Indexes magazines and journals covering subjects from the arts and the humanities to social sciences, and science and technology. 
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe 
  • Provides access to a wide range of domestic and international news, business, and legal information sources, including legislative, government, company, financial and demographic information, market research, and industry reports.

Journal Indexes and Abstracts
  • Criminal Justice Abstracts Offers in-depth abstracts of scholarly criminology and criminal justice literature with coverage of journals, books, reports, dissertations, and unpublished papers on criminology and related disciplines.

  • National Criminal Justice Abstracts Database
  • Provides summaries of criminal justice publications, including Federal, State, and Local government reports, books, research reports, journal articles, and unpublished research. To search the National Criminal Justice Research Service collection of 7,000+ full-text publications, go to the NCJRS Virtual Library.
     
  • PAIS International
  • Contains abstracts of journal articles, books, statistical yearbooks, directories, conference proceedings, research reports and government documents. Topics covered include criminal justice, economic, political and social issues, business, finance, law, international trade and relations, public administration, and much more.
     
  • PsychINFO
  • Provides indexing and abstracting of psychology and related social and behavioral sciences journals.

Statistical Sources
  • Bureau of Justice Statistics
  • Primary source for United States criminal justice statistics. Provides statistical reports on many aspects of crime and criminal justice, including capital punishment, prisons, drunk driving, probation, police departments, and victims of crime. 
     
  • Center for Disease Control Health Topic: Violence/Suicide
  • Provides statistical data on criminal justice related topics, such as violence and suicide.
     
  • Crime and Justice Data Online Provides crime trends, homocide trends, law enforcement management, and administrative statistics from state and local agencies. Tables can be downloaded as .csv (comma separated value) files.

  • Mapping and Analysis for Public Safety
  • An international clearinghouse for information in the area of crime mapping technology. Includes links to downloadable crime mapping software such as CrimeStats.
     
  • Crime in the United States
  • Referred to as the Uniform Crime Report provides crime statistics for the U.S., states, regions, counties, cities, and towns. Printed version of publication available at Reference Desk, First Floor, Call Number: REF J 1.14/7:
     
  • Fedstats 
  • Provides easy access to a full-range of statistical information. It allows users to search by keyword. Connects to statistics arranged by broad subject categories and agency name. 
     
  • Justice Research and Statistics Association Crime and Justice Atlas
  • Provides a graphical presentation of trends in crime and sentencing over the last 25 years for the nation as a whole, and for each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia individually.
     
  • Social Statistics Briefing Room: Crime Statistics
  • Contains statistical data on violent crime, murder and property rates, drug abuse arrest violations, and federal correctional populations. Includes links to Bureau of  Justice Statistics and Federal Bureau of Investigation.
     
  • Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics 
  • Contains statistical data on criminal justice systems, numbers of criminal offenses and reports of victims of crimes, etc. Printed version of publication available at Reference Desk, First Floor, Call  Number: REF J 29.9/16:
     
  • Statistical Abstract of the United States

  • Statistical Analysis Centers (Justice Research and Statistics Association) 
  • Links to specific criminal justice-related data sets at the state level.
     
  • Statistical Universe 
  • Allows users to search American Statistical Index, the latest edition of Statistical Abstracts of the United States, the Statistical Research Index, and Index to International Statistics. Includes full-text of selected U.S. federal and state documents.
     
  • USA Counties
  • You can then view U.S. government statistical data on the county. Statistics cover the following topics: population, vital statistics, education, labor force, income, federal expenditures, and business.
