Company and Industry Subject Guide

This subject guide covers company and industry information resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles,  company and industry websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call  numbers are provided for print publications.

  • ABI/INFORM
    Covers nearly every aspect of business, including company histories and new product development. Includes abstracts and indexes of significant articles from nearly 1,000 current business and management periodicals. Provides access to selected full-text  articles. 

  • Business and Company Resource Center
    Provides company profiles, brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies, and periodicals.

  • Factiva (formerly Dow Jones Interactive)
    Provides financial, historical, and product information for publicly traded companies worldwide, full-text magazine and journal articles, and current and historical stock quotes.

  • InfoTrac OneFile
    A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics.
     
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
    Provides access to a wide range of domestic and international news, business, and legal information sources, including legislative, government, company, financial and demographic information, market research, and industry reports. 
     
  • Mergent Online
    Index of real-time EDGAR (SEC) filings, providing the ability to select a needed document, view it and print it. All financials "as reported", providing unparalleled review of balance sheets, income statements, expenditures, assets, liabilities, cash flow, performace trends, and more.

  • Standard and Poor's Net Advantage
    Provides full-text access to Corporation Records, Dividend Record, Earnings Guide, Industry Surveys, Mutual Fund Reports, The OUTLOOK, the Register of Corporations, Directors and Executives, and much more. 

  • Thomson Research (formerly Global Access)
    Contains information from SEC filings and corporate annual reports. Includes financial and management information for more than 12,000 public companies trading on major U.S. exchanges.

  • ValueLine Investment Survey
    Contains full-page reports and analyst commentaries on more than 1,700 stocks. Includes current and historical statistics on investment factors and three to five year forecasts.

  • Industry Norms and Key Business Ratios
    Offers industry norms and key business ratios by SIC code. This printed publication is available in the Reference Collection, First Floor, Call Number: REF HF5681.R25I523

  • RMA Annual Statement Studies
    Includes historical income statements, balance sheets, and financial ratios. This printed publication is available in the Reference Collection, First Floor, Call Number: REF HF5681.B2R58

  • Standard and Poor's Industry Surveys
    Contains economic and business information on major U.S. industries, analyzing operations, highlighting current problems and opportunities, and giving trends.  It is  also available online via Standard and Poor's Net Advantage. Earlier editions are available in the Reference Collection, First Floor, Call Number: REF HC106.6.S74 
  • Statistical Universe
    Provides bibliographic citations and abstracts to statistical publications from the U.S. government, international governmental organizations, state government, and private organizations, including selected full-text publications. It includes a combination of three indexes: American Statistical Index, Statistical Reference Index, and the Index to International Statistics.  Includes also the Statistical Abstract of the U.S.
     
  • Statistical Abstract of the United States 
    A collection of statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States with selected international data included.

  • Current Employment Statistics (Bureau of Labor Statistics)
    Provides detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for the Nation.

  • Current Industrial Reports (Census Bureau)
    Measures industrial activity in important commodity areas such as textiles and apparel, chemicals, primary metals, computer and electronic components, industrial equipment, aerospace equipment, and consumer goods. Published monthly, quarterly, and annually.

  • Current Labor Statistics
    Online access to the 51 tables of current labor statistic featured in the printed edition of the Monthly Labor Review.

  • EDGAR Database of Corporation Information
    Provides 10-K, 20-F, proxy statements, annual reports, and other financial statements of public companies filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
     
  • Fortune 500
    Includes a listing of Fortune 500 companies plus their ranking. Provides latest company news searchable by phrase or ticker symbol.
     
  • Forbes 500
    Provides access to company news and analysis, a directory of  the public and private companies, and other financial information.
     
  • Hoover's Corporate Register
    Contains company profiles with links to the company's webpage. However, certain portions of the website are only accessible through their subscription service.
     
  • Industry at a Glance (Bureau of Labor Statistics)
    Contains profiles of the nine industry divisions, including statistical facts and links to additional information.
     
  • North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 
    Replaces the United States Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. Includes definitions for each industry,  tables showing correspondence between 1997 NAICS, and 1987 SICs, and a comprehensive index. 
     
  • Public Register's Annual Report Service
    Includes company financial information, including annual reports or 10-Ks on over 3,600 public companies.
     
  • Yahoo! Finance Company and Fund Index 
    Offers information on over 9,000 public companies, including contact information, business summaries, officer and employee information, sector and industry classifications, business and earnings announcement summaries, and financial statistics and ratios.
