Animal Science Subject Guide

This subject guide covers animal science resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles, animal science websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call number are provided for print publications.

  • Infotrac One. A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature, art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles many with images. Updated daily. 
  • Nutritiongate.com. Includes abstracts of information for nutrition and food research scientists, dieticians, food industry professionals, and animal production specialists.

  • Agricola. Indexes journal articles and other publications as well as audiovisual materials, maps, books, software, conference proceedings, theses, research reports and government documents in animal science, entomology, aquatic science, fisheries, and feed science
  • Biological Abstracts. An index with abstracts to periodicals in biology and the life sciences worldwide.
  • Biological Sciences. Abstracts and citations to a wide range of research in zoology, animal behavior, genetics, biotechnology and some aspects of agriculture and veterinary science.
  • Biology Digest. Abstracts and indexes of domestic and international literature in the area of life sciences.

  • Dictionary of Agriculture. by Kathryn L. Lipton. Lynne Riener Publishers, 1995. From abaca to zoomosis, this dictionary provides an invaluable source of information for everyone from undergraduates to seasoned policymakers. REF S411.L55. Located in Reference Dept., first floor of the library. 
  • Encyclopedia of Agricultural Science. by Charles J. Arntzen. Academic Press, 1994. Contains chapters on animal behavior, breeding and genetics, nutrition, reproduction, and waste management. REF S411.E713. Located in Reference Dept., first floor of the library. 
  • Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews. Series B: Livestock Feeds and Feeding. Indexes (1977- ) Covers world literature on the nutrition of animals, including chemistry of foods, physiology of digestion, metabolism, growth, and reproduction. REF SF95.N867. Located in Reference Dept., first floor of the library.

  • American Society of Animal Science. Established in 1908, the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) is a professional organization for animal scientists designed to help members provide effective leadership through research, extension, teaching and service for the dynamic and rapidly changing livestock and meat industries. Website includes sectional news, publications, legislative action concerning animal science and much more.
  • Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory. AIPL conducts research to discover, test, and implement improved genetic evaluation techniques for economically important traits of dairy cattle and goats.
  • Animal Parasitic Diseases Laboratory. APDL's mission is to reduce the economic cost of parasitism in livestock and poultry and to reduce the risk of transmission of parasite zoonosis to humans.
  • Animal Search. searchable database of web links to many different animal species. Can also browse by animal group and geographical region. Good starting point for searching the web for animal-related information. 
  • Animal Welfare Information Center. Includes bibliographies, newsletters and information on laws and legislation from the National Agricultural Library.on laws and legislation from the National Agricultural Library.
  • Breeds of Livestock. Information on livestock by world region or by species name. Data are available on cattle, horses, swine, goats, and sheep and organized as encyclopedia entries. 
  • Germplasm and Gamete Physiology Laboratory. GGPL's mission is to improve the genetic, reproductive and productive efficiency of livestock and poultry through fundamental research on germplasm, gamete biology and embryology.
  • National Institute for Animal Agriculture. The Institute's purpose is to provide a source for information, education and solutions for animal agriculture challenges. Links to topical issues in animal agriculture, online publications, continuing education opportunities, and agricultural materials. 
  • NetVet. An excellent starting point for finding animal science information on the internet.
  • USDA Economics and Statistics System. Provides access to over forty genetic sequence databases and related resources on species of agricultural significance. Users can search each database individually, search all databases in a particular category (plants, livestock, other organisms), or search all databases simultaneously.
