Counseling Subject Guide

This subject guide covers counseling resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles,  counseling websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call  number are provided for print publications.


Full-Text Databases

  • Chronicle of Higher Education. News and information on the academic world, including reports of current events and issues, developments in information technology, and job opportunities. Includes the full current issue and 10 years of archives.
  • CQ Researcher. Presents full-text articles on current social, political, economic, and international issues.
  • CQ Weekly Report. Offers in-depth full-text articles on U.S. Congressional legislation, actions, and developments.
  • InfoTrac OneFile. A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles many with images. Updated daily.
  • Mental Measurement Yearbook. Contains full-text information about and the reviews of all English-language standardized tests covering educational skills, personality, vocational aptitude, psychology, and related areas.
  • Oxford University Journals. OUP publishes a wide range of respected and scholarly Psychology and Psychiatry journals. Key titles include Harvard Review of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy Research, Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice and Journal of Pediatric Psychology. Keyword searches can be done at this site. Good source for full-text articles on counseling.
  • ProQuest Education Journals. Offering complete information on hundreds of educational topics, this database covers almost 400 leading journals in the field.
  • PsychARTICLES.  Searchable full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific articles in psychology.Coverage spans 1985 to present.

Journal Indexes and Abstracts

  • Dissertation Abstracts. Selectively covers masters theses and dissertations including dissertations from North American and Europe. Covers all subject disciplines. Covers 1861 to present and includes abstracts since 1988. Thesis abstracts have been included since 1988. Database is updated monthly.
  • ERIC (via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) References to thousands of educational topics. Includes journal articles, books, theses, conference papers, standards, and guidelines.
  • PscyINFO. Produced by The American Psychological Association. The most comprehensive source for bibliographic coverage of psychology and behavioral sciences literature; with special subset files ClinPSYC. 
  • Statistical Universe. Full-text database to U.S. Statistical data and some international statistics. Features include searching the Power Tables for finding fast answers, searching summaries of statistical publications for comprehensive overview of documents or selecting links to other websites with useful information about statistics. 
  • Teacher Resource Center. Indexes and abstracts over 280 popular teacher and administrator trade journals in the field of education.

  • Baker Encyclopedia of Psychology and Counseling by David G. Benner. Baker, 1999. Provides thorough coverage of psychological terms, concepts, and research from a Christian point of view, identifying the issues and applications of particular importance from that perspective and suggesting ways of evaluating the concepts, theories, and research findings in terms of biblical teachings.   • Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology and Behavioral Science. by W. Edward Craighead. Wiley, 2000, 4 vols. Encyclopedia of current knowledge in psychology and behavioral science. Cross-references are provided. LOCATION: Reference Collection, First Floor, Call Number: REF BF31 E52.
  • Dictionary of Counseling. by Donald A. Biggs. Academic Press, 1994. This dictionary of counseling for the United States focuses on the twentieth century, a time when the concept of counseling emerged in a number of different contexts.   • Encyclopedia of Human Behavior. by V.S. Ramachandran. Academic Press. 1994. 4 vols. This reference woks covers all aspects of human behavior. Excellent source for overviews of major concepts. Location: Reference Collection, First Floor, Call Number: REF BF31.E5.
  • Encyclopedia of Human Emotions. by David Levinson. Macmillan, 1999. 2 vols. This two-volume reference brings together information from the behavioral, social, biological, medical and physical sciences to summarize what is known today about the nature, causes, expressions and societal roles of human emotions throughout history and across cultures.   • Encyclopedia of School Psychology. by Steven W. Lee. Thousand Oaks, Calif., Sage Publications, 2005.  The Encyclopedia provides both an introduction to the field and a way for experienced practitioners to gain a deeper understanding of how school psychology has progressed to match the demands of the 21st century.

The American Counseling Association is a not-for-profit, professional and educational organization that is dedicated to the growth and enhancement of the counseling professional. This site includes code of ethics, government relations, resources and books, expanding your skills, online courses and many more.
  • American Psychological Association. Based in Washington, DC, the American Psychological Association (APA) is a scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in the United States. With more than 155,000 members, APA is the largest association of psychologists worldwide. APA works to advance psychology as a science, a profession, and a means of promoting human welfare. This site provides information about APA, how to apply for grants, free mental health information and much more.
  • American School Counselor Association. The American School Counselor Association, with a membership of more than 12,000 school counseling professionals, focuses on providing professional development, enhancing school counseling programs, and researching effective school counseling practices. ASCA's mission is to promote excellence in professional school counseling and the development of all students. Categories include standards, ethics, publications and much more. Site has a search engine.
  • APA PsychCrawler. PsychCrawler is a product of the American Psychological Association created to provide quick access to quality content in the field of psychology available on the web.
  • Counseling Center Village. Just as a real world village is made up of many individual homes, the Counseling Center Village is made up of the many home pages -- and other web resources -- created by college and university counseling centers around the world. You will find here a wide range of resources for the counseling center professional. Collaboration has never been easier!
  • Online Dictionary of Mental Health. The Online Dictionary of Mental Health is a global information resource and research tool covering all of the disciplines contributing to our understanding of mental health . The Dictionary is an exercise in democratic psychiatry in keeping with the traditions of the host site. Therefore there are no definitions here; instead there are links to many sites offering different viewpoints on issues in mental health, which are accessible using the A-Z links.
  • PubMed. Maintained by the National Library of Medicine, PubMed provides access to the 9 million citations in MEDLINE and Pre-MEDLINE (with links to participating on-line journals), and other related databases. Of particular note is the Journal Browser which allows users to enter a MEDLINE journal abbreviation to get the full title of the journal. 
  • School Psychology Resources Online. School Psychology Resources for Psychologists, Parents and Educators. Research learning disabilities, ADHD, functional behavioral assessment, autism, adolescence, parenting, psychological assessment, special education, mental retardation, mental health, and more.
