Aquaculture Subject Guide

This subject guide covers aquaculture resources available at the Johnston Memorial Library, including full-text journals, magazine, and newspaper articles,  aquaculture websites, and printed materials in the Reference Collection. This is not a comprehensive subject guide, but rather a selective list of materials that are most useful for locating information in this field. Library location and call  number are provided for print publications.

Full-text Databases

  • ABI/INFORM. Indexes business magazines and journals covering the subjects of business and management, finance, trade, products, trends, companies and more.   Excellent database to research the business and management aspects of aquaculture.
  • Highwire Press. Full-text journal articles in in the areas of biological science, medical science, physical science, and social science. Indexes a number of agriculture and aquaculture journals.
  • Infotrac One. A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles many with images. Updated daily. A good source to research the business aspects of aquaculture.
  • Nutritiongate.com. Includes abstracts of information for nutrition and food research scientists, dieticians, food industry professionals, and animal production specialists.
  • Statistical Universe. Full-text database to U.S. Statistical data and some international statistics. Features include searching the Power Tables for finding fast answers, searching summaries of statistical publications for comprehensive overview of documents or selecting links to other websites with useful information about statistics.

  • Agricola.   Literature citations for journal articles, monographs, proceedings, theses, patents, translations, audiovisual materials, computer software, and technical reports pertaining to all aspects of agriculture.
  • Biological Abstracts. An index with abstracts to periodicals in biology and the life sciences worldwide.
  • Water Resources Abstracts.  Summaries of technical and scientific literature on water-related topics covering the characteristics, conservation, control,  pollution, treatment, use and management of water resources.

  • Aquaculture Outlook (LDP-AQS).   Aquaculture Outlook is a product of the Economic Research Service.  This source examines the U.S. aquaculture industry: production, inventory, sales, prices, inputs, and trade of catfish, trout, tilapia, salmon, mollusks, crawfish, shrimp, ornamental fish and new species.
  • Fish Farming and Aquaculture.  This site is sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service. Includes information on how to select the right fish to raise, pesticides, planning, pond construction, and information for prospective fish growers.
  • Guide to Federal Aquaculture Programs and Services.This guide is a directional resource to aquaculture programs and services within the federal government.  Program and service descriptions and World Wide Web links to the homepages of many Federal government agencies or organizations with respect to its aquaculture activities. 
  • United States Joint Subcommittee on Aquaculture.  The Joint Subcommittee on Aquaculture (JSA) serves as a Federal interagency coordinating group to increase the overall effectiveness and productivity of Federal aquaculture research, transfer, and assistance programs.  Excellent source for federal policy, programs, services and statistics on aquaculture.  Links to other aquaculture sites are included.

  • Aquaculture Dictionary-Aquatext.  Aquatext. com is a dictionary that is written by aquaculturists for aquaculturists. Over 2,500 aquaculture definitions including 280 tables, 250 pictures and 120 calculations
  • Aquaculture Health Page.  Compilation of aquaculture health information available on the Internet.  Includes information on fish, mollusk, and crustacean diseases, drugs, educational programs, books and periodicals, organizations, and diagnostic services.
  • Aquaculture Magazine Online.  Information on Fish Farming, Processing, Breeding and raising aquatic species including tilapia, trout, salmon, shrimp, catfish, crayfish, oysters, redclaw, hybrid striped bass and shellfish.  Topics include pond management, diseases, market trends, farm stocking, recirculating systems, statistics, selling, nutrition, feed and more.  U.S. and international aquaculture industry focus.
  • AquaNIC.  The Agriculture Network Information Center (AgnIC) is a voluntary alliance of the National Agricultural Library (NAL), land-grant universities and other agricultural organizations, in cooperation with citizen groups and government agencies.  AgNIC focuses on providing agricultural information in electronic format over the World Wide Web via the Internet).  AquaNIC houses or provides links to thousands of state, national, and international aquaculture publications, newsletters, visual media, calendars, job services, directories and specialty sections for species and production systems
  • Aquatic Network. Aquatic Network describes itself as an information service for the aquatic world.  Subject areas covered include aquaculture, conservation, fisheries, and limnology.  Searches can be done at this site.
  • Definition of Fisheries Technical TermsThe Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) offers this helpful list of definitions of important fisheries terms.  Technical terms from "Absolute Recruitment" through 'Yield per Recruit" are described clearly in straight forward language.  Whether for the fishers students or incoming fisheries scientists, this resource will lend a helping hand where other dictionaries just don't salt the fish.
  • Fishing for Information.  This site is a hypertext guide to Internet resources in aquatic science.  The main emphasis is on aquaculture and fisheries, including: fish farming, aquatic environments, and water resources.
  • World Aquaculture.  This site is designed to present a vast, dynamic database of information pertaining to aquaculture.  The creators hope that this database will help form the foundations of an effective aquaculture management system.  For an efficient management system to exist, an adequate working knowledge of aquaculture must be developed and a means of communication so that all aquaculture farms can benefit from the information and avoid mistakes made by other farms.  This site is an attempt to establish such a database. 
  • World Aquaculture Society.  WAS is an international non-profit society with over 4,000 members in 94 countries.  Founded in 1970, the primary focus of WAS is to improve communication and information exchange within the diverse global aquaculture community.  The WAS is committed to excellence in science, technology, education, and information exchange and to the progressive and sustainable development of aquaculture throughout the world.
