University Library Departments
The Serials Department processes, houses, and maintains print, microform, and electronic serials, including newspapers, journals, and magazines. Private study rooms are available on a first come first served basis. Two media presentation rooms are equipped with a Smart Board, PC, and DVD/Video player. Users must present two picture I.D.’s and sign in to use these rooms.
Approximately 150 print titles are controlled behind the Serials public service desk. Students, faculty, and staff of Virginia State University must present a valid I.D. card or current driver’s license to use controlled titles. Visitors must present a current driver’s license or military I.D. Serials do not circulate outside the library. Special consideration is made to faculty on a title-by-title basis for short periods of time.
ARRANGEMENT OF SERIALS
Current serials, microfilm and microfiche holdings are arranged alphabetically by title.
Bound serials are arranged by Library of Congress class number.
LOCATION OF SERIALS
Bound serials, beginning with 1980 to the present, are housed on the second floor of the library. All bound serials, 1979 and older, are housed in storage rooms accessible only to library employees. Titles may be requested at the Serials Desk, Circulation Desk, or Reference Desk. Items will be obtained by a staff member, and must be used inside the library.
There are several microform scanners and printers in the Serials Department. All microform printers use the VSU One Card to make copies and are ten cents ($.10) per page.
The Serials Department houses 16 computers, providing Internet access only. Printing from computers is ($ .05) per page. A VSU One Card must be used to make all copies. Copies made from print journals are ten cents ($.10) per page. Photocopiers and One Card deposit machines are available at the Reference Desk, on the first floor, and in the Computer Lab in the basement.
LOCATING SERIAL HOLDINGS
Most serials owned by the library are listed in TROY (Library Catalog) the library’s on-line catalog. The VSU Journal Locator, on the library’s home page, identifies electronic journals available to students, faculty and staff.
For help in locating serials please contact the Serials service desk at 524-5042 or Ms. Susan Lobaugh, Serials Department Librarian, at 524-6957 or send e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. The following are sources of serial information. Some web sites may allow only library staff to access.
