Serials
The Serials
Department processes, houses, and maintains print, microform,
and electronic serials, including newspapers, journals, magazines,
and ERIC documents. Several specialized collections are also available
in microform. These include Tests in Microfiche, Gerritsen Women’s
History collection, FBI files of prominent Black individuals and
organizations, and the Freeman file, an index to the Richmond
News Leader and Richmond Times Dispatch from the late 1920’s
to October 1985.
USING
SERIALS
Approximately 200 heavily used titles are controlled behind the
Serials public service desk. Students, faculty, and staff of Virginia
State University must present a valid I.D. card or current driver’s
license to use controlled titles. Visitors must present a current
driver’s license or military I.D. to use controlled titles.
Serials do not circulate outside the library. Special consideration
is made to faculty on a title-by-title basis for short periods
of time.
ARRANGEMENT
OF SERIALS
Current serials, microfilm and microfiche holdings are arranged
alphabetically by title.
Bound serials are arranged by Library of Congress class number.
The A through P class numbers begin on the second floor bay, Room
201. The Q through Z class number begins on the third floor bay,
Room 301.
LOCATION
OF SERIALS
At this time, only bound serials beginning in 1980 to the present
are housed in Lindsay Montague. All bound serials 1979 and older
are housed in a separate building adjacent to the circulating
books building on Carter G. Woodson Avenue. This building is accessible
only to library employees. Users may request titles at the Circulation
Desk. The volume will be obtained by a staff member, and must
be used within the library.
MICROFORM
PRINTERS
There are several microform scanners and printers in the Serials
Department. All printers use the Smart Card system to make copies.
In Lindsay Montague cards are available from the vending unit
located across from the Reference Desk on the first floor. The
card costs fifty cents ($.50) and value may be added to the card
at any time. Copies are ten cents ($.10) per page.
LOCATING
SERIAL HOLDINGS
All
serials owned by the library are listed in TROY, the library on-line
catalog. The VSU Journal Locator identifies all journals , print
and electronic, available to students, faculty and staff. The
