In 1963 Virginia Governor Albertis Harrison at a press conference
announced that the children of Prince Edward County would
return to school in the fall, a privately financed school
would function for one year in an effort to assess the damage
of the previous four years without public education. The
Governor announced the formation of the Prince Edward County
Free School. Seen here are the trustees. The members of
the board of trustees were: sitting left to right Dr. Robert
P. Daniel President of Virginia State College, Virginia
Governor the Hon. Colgate W. Darden Jr., served as chair,
Dr. Fred B. Cole President of Washington and Lee University,
standing Dr. Earl H. McClenney President of Saint Pauls
College, Dr. F.D.G. Ribble retired dean of University of
Virginia law school and Dr. Thomas H. Henderson President
of Virginia Union University.
