What
is the Trojan Research Gateway?
It is an informational research gateway to the University Library collections
of electronic resources and services. It enables library users (VSU faculty,
students, and staff) to search online catalogs, full-text databases, citation
databases, and e-journals.
Why do I need the Trojan Research Gateway?
The research gateway provides VSU library users with the capability to search across
multiple databases simultaneously. In
other words, library users may submit a single query to search up to ten
library databases at once.
How do I access the
Trojan Research Gateway?
Trojan Research Gateway is available at the VSU Library Homepage
from on and off-campus. By clicking on the link that says Trojan Research
Gateway, you gain access to this vital resource.
Why should I use the
Trojan Research Gateway?
Trojan Research Gateway includes the following benefits: to locate library
databases by name, keyword, or subject; to find journals by title, subject,
publisher, and ISSN; to search across multiple library databases with a single
search; and to click-on the “Find-It VSU” button for all search results in
order to locate items online or available on the shelves at the Johnston
Memorial Library.
The
Trojan Research Gateway enables library users to select one of the following
search modules:
· Quick Search is the easiest
search to use. Resources are organized into subject areas or subject resource
groups called QuickSets. You can simply enter a term and click
to perform a search.
· Find Database function enables you to locate databases
in several ways, such as by title, by category or subcategory, or by other
criteria. Once you find an interesting database, you can search it on the spot
if the
icon is displayed.
· Find Journal opens a new
window containing the Journal Locator A-Z list. This enables you to find the
journals in which you are interested according to their title or by entering
one or more criteria: e-Journal name, an ISSN or an e-ISSN, or subject.
· MetaSearch, also known as federated searching or
cross-database searching, means to submit a single query simultaneously to
several databases. MetaSearch provides control over which specific databases are searched and provides a
variety of additional options. You can locate databases in several ways, such
as by title, by category and subcategory or by other criteria.
My Cart enables you to
personalize your environment, to create your own database lists, save records
that you find interesting for future reference, and define your preferences for
the display of results.
My Articles allows library users
to keep selected records in their personal My
Articles folder for future use. To use this feature, library users must
click-on the log-in icon
before beginning your search and then enter
your user name and password from the campus active directory. This will enable
you to add records to the basket, which is the default for the My Articles folder, by clicking the
basket
function in a results list. You can also
create new folders, name them and move records into them from your basket or
from another folder.
What is the relationship between the Trojan
Research Gateway and the Journal Locator Service?
Trojan Research Gateway allows library users to locate and present article records
for all library resources. The service assigns a
button to each record to direct users to the
Journal Locator. The user clicks the button for a certain record and receives a
list of web-based resources such as the library catalog (
TROY
), citation databases, full-text
databases, and interlibrary loan service, ILLiad.
What
personalization options does the Trojan Research Gateway offer?
Trojan Research Gateway provides a number of personalization features. For
example, users can:
- Create and save a personal list of relevant
resources.
- Save queries for later sessions.
- Catalog findings in a personal "My Cart," along with the records' links. The links, including the Journal Locator service,
can be invoked at a later time.
- Define "alerts"- queries that run
automatically according to a user-defined schedule and notify the user
about new findings.
How can
a user save records that are found by searching with the Trojan Research
Gateway?
Users have three options for saving records. They can:
- Save records to disk in various formats
(including citation formats - EndNote, ProCite, and Reference Manager).
- Send records by e-mail.
